When Graham Mylward joined Hampshire’s Road Safety Team in 2008 he already had a good deal of experience in the practical assessment of mature drivers.
Since taking the lead on Hampshire’s Driver Skills Scheme 60+, which is designed to help older drivers to maintain their independence by continuing to drive safely, he has used his enthusiasm and passion to develop the scheme into one of the most successful in the country.
His focus in recent years has been to gain a good understanding of the needs and behaviour of older drivers, and tailor the scheme to meet these needs. By looking at the circumstances in which older drivers are most vulnerable, the routes used on an assessment are carefully chosen to try to include vulnerabilities that a particular driver may face.
